Tap into an ancient, primal bond with the universe.

The night sky has long captivated humanity. Few celestial events mesmerize like the blood moon, where the moon takes on a deep red hue.

This phenomenon inspires myths, legends, and rituals across cultures.

A blood moon is a total lunar eclipse. It occurs when the Earth aligns perfectly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on our satellite.

Some sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere. It scatters shorter wavelengths and allows longer wavelengths, like red and orange, to reach the moon’s surface. This process creates the iconic reddish glow that gives the blood moon its name.

Many cultures have attached spiritual significance to the blood moon.

The Inca Empire believed that the blood moon was a result of a jaguar attacking and eating the moon. The jaguar’s assault caused the moon to turn red and the feline descended to Earth to devour humans. To prevent this, the Incas would perform loud rituals to scare the jaguar away to save the moon and themselves.

The Mesopotamians kept detailed records of lunar eclipses. They viewed the blood moon as an omen of the death of a king. The eclipse was caused by seven demons who attacked the moon. They performed rituals to protect their rulers.

In many Native American cultures, the blood moon holds spiritual importance. The Hupa and Karuk tribes of California believed that the moon’s red color was caused by the blood of a great battle between the sun and the moon. They performed rituals for the moon to heal.

Pagan and Wiccan traditions incorporate blood moon rituals into their practices. These vary widely, but they generally harness the energy of the blood moon.

One ritual involves setting intentions. Participants write down things they want to let go of. As the blood moon rises, they burn these papers to banish negativity.

Another ritual is the creation of a blood moon elixir. Place a jar of water under the light of the blood moon to absorb its energy, then consume the water. Drinkers are imbued with the moon’s power.

The blood moon is a time for divination. Rituals use tarot cards, runes, or other divination tools to gain guidance from the spirits. Others meditate or journal to reflect on their personal growth.

Through blood moon rituals, tap into the primal bond with the universe.
